The first plight of life for a baby sea turtle comes immediately after hatching. Appropriately called “hatchlings,” the babies must make the treacherous trek towards the water while avoiding a whole slew of predators and obstacles. Experts estimate that only one out of a thousand hatchlings will survive to adulthood. Once hatched, the babies will wait for the temperature to cool, indicating nighttime when there will be less predators. Then they make a run for it. Reaching the water is only half the journey. After that, they enter a stage known as the “swimming frenzy” where they move away from coasts and more dangerous waters.
