What can you expect when two professional dancers tie the knot? One stellar performance at the end of the night, of course. But that’s not without months of preparation, including online video tutorials and dance lessons for the participants who were less gifted in the art of dance.
Kirk Henning and Valerie Tellmann-Henning got married on July 25 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, Va., according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. The reception took place at the Richmond CenterStage, a stage the couple had shared countless times in the past as members of the Richmond Ballet. During the reception, Henning and his groomsmen put on a surprise dance performance for the bride, who was clearly in awe of the display. Wedding videographer Ginger Topham captured the eight-minute medley on film and uploaded it to YouTube, where it’s since been viewed over 5.5 million times.
Valerie told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that prior to the wedding she told Kirk he ought to work on his groomsmen dance. The remark was made partially in jest, as she knew his busy schedule may not allow for it. Unbeknownst to her, Kirk had already started preparing four months in advance of their July wedding, but because he wanted it to be a surprise he told her it likely wouldn’t happen.
Kirk’s first step was to send out tutorial videos to his eight groomsmen, four of whom were also professional dancers, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Because the remaining four participants were on a different playing field, Kirk had his work cut out for him. That’s why he started the process so far in advance, in hopes that a few of his buddies would learn to dance well enough to keep the pace. Kirk choreographed a dance set to a number of hits, including “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson and “Crazy” by Britney Spears, among a few others.
The dance spanned just under eight minutes and had guests hooting and hollering. “People were going nuts!” Kirk told the Huffington Post. The masterfully choreographed dance had Valerie alternating between fits of laughter, applause, and disbelief. For the most part, it’s even difficult to tell which dancers are the amateurs and which have been doing it all their life. This is some of the best wedding dance choreography you’ll see.
Below you can watch Kirk and his groomsmen’s hard work come to fruition. Be sure to keep an eye on Valerie, who just can’t seem to get enough of it.
