Taking on a new interior design project can be both daunting and exciting, especially when there is renovation involved. Whether it’s for an old home or a new home, renovation can often be expensive and time-consuming. However, there are a number of practical measures that can be taken to avoid a bank-breaking remodeling project.
In the video below, Tara Dennis with Better Homes and Gardens brings an interior design idea to life during a bathroom renovation project. Dennis’ project is not only beginner-friendly, but it’s also a cheap bathroom renovation. While this particular remodel is easy on the wallet that’s not always the case with bathroom renovation design considering that plumbing and bathroom tiling are often involved. Fortunately for Dennis and her team, the bathroom they redesigned primarily needed cosmetic fixes so they were able to remodel it on a budget.
The project begins with Dennis and her team removing the bathroom vanity and the glass shower enclosure, both of which were too old to complete the new interior design with. Dennis later tackles the old bathroom tiles with a fresh coat of paint and then has a bathtub insert installed over the current bathtub, which was an unsightly blue. The bathtub insert allows Dennis to achieve the look of a brand new bathtub without having to deal with bathtub paint or having to spend a lot of money on a new bathtub installation.
According to This Old House, having a new bathtub installed can range anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000, which is why alternative methods are often sought by homeowners who are working on a budget. This Old House presents two options for cheap bathtub renovations: bathtub liners, also known as bathtub inserts, which Dennis uses in the video, and bathtub refinishing. Both methods provide the look of a brand new tub without the exorbitant costs.
One of the most significant factors that helped with Dennis’ goal of doing a cheap bathroom renovation was the fact that she used recylced materials to replace the old bathroom fixtures. Dennis visits a recycling yard where she picks up seveal bathroom supplies including a mirror, shower screen, vanity, and bathroom sink. Using recycled materials helped keep the costs of the project low. In the video, Dennis states that her trip to the recycling yard culminated in a mere $90 purchase.
Dennis wraps up the remodeling project by installing the last of the shower and bathtub fixtures, and adding some warm decorative touches. This DIY bathroom renovation is just one of many house-related projects uploaded to the Better Homes and Gardens YouTube channel.
