Woman Uses White Vinegar To Clean Inside Her Dishwasher

Anyone who has had the pleasure of owning a dishwasher knows just how valuable of an amenity it is. Dishwashers help alleviate loads of time-consuming and often tedious cleaning that comes with everyday living. What is perhaps less well-known is how to keep a dishwasher clean throughout all of the cycles it operates.

Dishwashers may leave grimy kitchenware sparkling clean, but the appliance itself accumulates food and stains the longer it runs without routine cleaning. Fortunately, Sara Lynn Cauchon from the popular YouTube channel The Domestic Geek is here to teach you how to clean your dishwasher. In a 2012 video, Cauchon demonstrates to followers the proper way to care for dishwashers, an appliance that often goes overlooked when it comes to cleaning.

Cauchon’s method is not only easy to perform, but it’s also effective and affordable; all of the supplies required for the process are common household items that are likely already in your kitchen. Cauchon begins the routine by pouring a cup of white vinegar into the base of the dishwasher, instructing viewers that the dishwasher should then be run on an empty cycle to clean the inside. Cauchon advises that dishwashers be cleaned using this method at least once a month.

The kitchen-savvy host also addresses the common problem of a dishwasher not draining. The more a dishwasher is used, the more it collects food particles at the base of the appliance within the trap. Cauchon explains that an unattended trap can lead to clogs and unpleasant odors, an issue that is best avoided by occasionally emptying the trap. Odors can be further eliminated by using baking soda. A cleaning instructional published by Today is one of many methods that advise sprinkling baking soda at the base of the dishwasher before running a cycle in order to achieve a fresh-smelling machine.

Whichever method you decide on, the dishwasher will always be the one performing the brunt of the work, making it hard to argue doing routine cleanings of the appliance.

Cauchon’s video has been watched over 60,000 times with many YouTube users confessing in the comments that they never cleaned their dishwasher until they came across her video. According to The Domestic Geek website, Cauchon launched her YouTube channel in April 2014. The domestic expert has made several television appearances throughout her career in addition to having delivered motivational speeches, as explained in her bio.
