You’d be wise to grab the tissues now, because Molly’s story is something special.

Abused and neglected, Molly was overfed food that caused an allergic reaction. Her family couldn’t afford the necessary medical expenses to make her better, and her conditions went untreated for months. One infection turned into another, and by the time she was taken in by the Southern California Labrador Rescue, she was on the verge of dying. On top of her visible ailments, she was also suffering from a cancerous lump on her neck. “She was abused in the sense that she was overweight by about 30, 35 pounds, had a third of her fur missing, fly strikes all over her ears — they were bleeding,” Molly’s foster owner Dami recalls. She adds that Molly’s ears were like “shoe leather” from the inflammation from her infections, and her eyes were swollen shut.

It took her three months for her to fully recover — she had staph and yeast infections treated and a surgery for her cancer — but she’s now in remission from her cancer and has been adopted by a loving forever home. Better yet, however, is what she’s doing with her second chance at life. Molly has become a service dog who helps with therapy for cancer patients. “Molly has been this wonderful key to compassion,” says her new owner Michael. “I can’t imagine our life without her now.”
