You’re about to meet a brave little boy who goes by the nickname “John John.” He’s an energetic 5-year-old who dreams of becoming a firefighter when he grows up. In 2013, John was diagnosed with Stage 4 anaplastic ganglioglioma, an aggressive, malignant tumor in his brain. Last year, doctors told his parents he had three to nine months to live. But John John is a fighter.
Over the weekend of March 28th, 2015, Corner Kingdom teamed up with Evesham Fire Rescue and BELFOR Restoration to do something John and his family will never, ever forget. After raising nearly $11,000 and gathering over 50 volunteers, construction began to transform John’s bedroom into his Dream Firefighter room.
It’s incredible to see people from all different walks of life take part in a project for this one amazing family. Volunteers included players from the UPenn basketball team, electricians, and volunteer firefighters all working together to give John’s room a complete overhaul. Walls were ripped down, siding was put up, insulation, new window treatments, drywall — no detail or expense was spared. The end result is something you’ll have to see for yourself, but let me tell you — the reactions from John and his family during the big reveal will bring you to tears.
Many children with special needs or illnesses spend a significant amount of time in their room. Corner Kingdom re-designs rooms to provide a functional and nurturing space that benefits children with special needs and/or illnesses. Not only are the rooms functional, but they’re creatively designed to make these children feel like the Kings and Queens of their very own castles.
