An ultrasound begins with the doctor applying a clear gel to a certain part of the body in order for the transducer to “make secure contact with the body and eliminate air pockets between the transducer and the skin,” according to the Providence Imaging Center. The transducer is pressed against the skin and emits sound waves which then bounce off the baby to produce an image on the screen. According to What To Expect, pregnant women typically receive two ultrasounds during their pregnancy. While they can sometimes be uncomfortable, there are no proven associated risks.
