In 2012, military man Ben Harworth moved his family from Georgia to South Korea for a new assignment. Zeus, the family’s 65-pound Rottweiler/German Shepherd/Chow mix, was taken in by a friend. A few months later, the family received a terrible phone call — Zeus had died.

The Harworth’s were heartbroken to return to the US without their beloved Zeus. They relocated to Washington state, and that’s when the story takes a stunning turn.

Last month, a woman in North Carolina, Laura, noticed a big dog wandering around her neighborhood. He looked exhausted and ill, but when Laura opened her car door, the sweet dog jumped right in. She took him to the vet, and when the doctors scanned his microchip they discovered the truth — yes, this was Zeus! Laura was given Zeus’ contact information and she called the Harworth’s. “When I said, ‘We found your dog Zeus’ – because he was listed as lost — they said their dog was dead,” Laura recounts. But the more the strangers spoke and video-chatted, the more Ben and his family realized Zeus was indeed alive. Though it wasn’t clear where had Zeus been for the last three years and why was he was ever assumed to be dead or lost, Ben knew that Zeus was coming home; that’s all that really mattered.

Soon after Laura planned to get Zeus on a plane back to his family, the dog was diagnosed with heartworm, making it unsafe for him to fly from North Carolina to Washington. But in another expected turn of events, a practice manager at a Banfield hospital heard Zeus’ incredible story and volunteered to drive him 3,000 miles home!
