Richard Dubiel is 75 years old, but when it comes to working on his house, age hasn’t slowed him down much. For the past three months, Richard has been working on replacing the shingles on his house, all by himself; he likes to do things his way.
The old man’s laborious dedication caught the eye of his neighbor, David. David was stunned by the elderly man who crouched on his roof to lay each shingle down, piece by piece. Richard is in his mid-70s, after all, with calloused hands and weak knees. So, David took a photo of Richard working on his roof, posted it to Facebook, and asked if anyone knew a roofer who could help. David’s one post was shared more than a thousand times, and he was stunned when volunteers agreed to finish Richard’s roof that Saturday — for free.
Saturday came, and when David woke up, a group of volunteered had already gathered at Richard’s home, hard at work on the roof. The old man took comfort in being able to sit back and supervise the work, rather than do everything himself. His street was flooded with roofing trucks, and food was donated to the home for workers to enjoy. By noon, the new roof was complete.
But before they nailed the final shingle, the volunteers had Richard come up to attach it himself. Richard was dumbfounded by the act of kindness — and this man who had become rather jaded in his Golden Years says these strangers have repaired his faith in humanity.
