Eighteen-year-old Brennen Cooper was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after dousing his family dog in gasoline and lighting it on fire. Brennen told police officers that the dog, Bud, wasn’t potty trained and left a mess in his home. He also said that his father didn’t care about Bud and wanted him out of the house – so he took matters into his own hands. It was Brennen’s girlfriend who heard the cries of the dog and went to put out the flames with a shirt. She then brought the dog upstairs into the bathtub and put vinegar on him in order to minimize the damage of the burns.
Bug was soon after taken to the local animal hospital where he was examined and treated for his wounds. He is expected to make a full recovery. Brennen’s father, Brian, had no explanation as to why his son would do something so horrible. “These dogs are family members to us and that’s why I had my son arrested, because it would have been like setting one of my girls on fire — no different,” he said. Brian is seeking help for his son, whom he says bears the emotional scars from a troubled past.
