This is one of the most bittersweet love stories I’ve seen in a very long time. Grab your tissues for this one.
Millie has Alzheimer’s, but her husband Pat loves her just as much as the day he married her. And though Pat’s physical self is confined to a wheelchair, his mind is still razor sharp. He recalls the day they met as teenagers — he was an usher at a movie theater and helped Millie find her seat. The rest was history. They’ve been married for 76 years.
Today, Pat and Millie live in a nursing home. “We live separately because my wife started claiming that we were not married anymore,” he says. “Many times she’ll ask me, ‘Have you seen Pat?’ It’s enough to break your heart. But this dedicated husband goes to see his wife as much as he possibly can, and he’ll listen to her talk, ramble, and try to reminisce for hours on end. On their 76th wedding anniversary, Millie knew Pat was her husband. But sometimes, she doesn’t remember him at all. Despite the heartbreaking moments when Alzheimer’s sends those sharp, painful reminders, Pat continues to love Millie just the same. He lives for those moments where Millie remembers, no matter how fleeting they may be.
Meet Pat and Millie below, and please SHARE this eternal love story with your friends on Facebook.
