Humane Society of Kentucky veterinarians called for help after learning about a dog stranded in an overcrowded shelter in Kentucky.
Although the dog was pregnant, her condition required a caesarean section after being examined by veterinarians. Dr. Emily Bewley said a terrier named Mama Malone brought the puppies to the shelter just in time to give birth safely. So Dr. Bewley took the dog home to give birth peacefully.
However, the dog required a caesarean section and was returned to the maternity hospital. During the 20-minute operation, the dog gave birth to 9 puppies, surprising veterinarians as small dogs like Mama Malone usually give birth to 2-5 puppies.
There were fears that the mother dog would have difficulty communicating with her newborn puppies, but she woke up and immediately began acting like a mother.
All puppies will stay with their mothers at the Kentucky Humane Society until they are ready to move into permanent homes. How wonderful!
